Knightley to star in Silk adaptation

Keira Knightley will play the role of Helene in a film adaptation of Alessandro Baricco's bestselling novel Silk, according to her agent.

Opening in 1861, Silk tells the story of French silkworm smuggler Herve Joncour who has to leave his young wife, Helene, in order to transport his clandestine cargo from Japan.

While there he befriends a wealthy Japanese trader and falls in love with his beautiful European concubine.

Without speaking the same language, they communicate through letters until war intervenes.

Their unrequited love persists however, and Joncour's wife Helene begins to suspect.

The film will be directed by Francois Girard ('The Red Violin'), who has adapted the screenplay after a first draft was completed by Baricco.

Filming is set to start in spring 2006 when Knightley finishes work on the sequels to 'The Pirates of the Caribbean.
