Howard to shoot Da Vinci Code inside Louvre

Ron Howard
Director, Ron Howard will film some scenes of The Da Vinci Code in the Louvre.

According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, France will allow director Ron Howard to shoot some scenes in the Louvre for the film adaptation of The Da Vinci Code. The big screen adaptation of Dan Brown's bestseller is scheduled to start shooting in May of this year and will star Tom Hanks as Professor Robert Langon.

Le Parisien quoted a source at the Louvre as saying, "We strong approve of this project, the production team has been here to choose settings in the Grand Gallery, but also in the Mona Lisa room which will open after restoration on April 6."

The popularity of the Da Vinci Code has created a number of side industries in London and in Paris where specialized tours explore the locations described in the book. The book explores the theories behind the work of Leonardo da Vinci, whose most famous painting, The Mona Lisa, hangs in the Louvre.

France last allowed filiming in the Louvre in 1999 for Belphegor, a classic French mystery tale of a ghost who haunts the Louvre and steals precious artifacts.

Filming usually takes place at night and on Tuesdays, when the museum is closed to the public.

The Da Vinci Code is scheduled for release in 2006.
