Brown takes Best Book for Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code
Dan Brown's controversial but bestselling novel, The Da Vinci Code, was last night named Best Book at the British Book Awards in London.

The conspiracy thriller has sold more than 17 million copies around the world and has been translated into 44 languages.

In his videotaped acceptance speech he said that that he was delighted the book had proved so controversial but added, "For the record, it is a novel".

British actress Sheila Hancock was named Author of the Year, for her book, The Two of Us: My Life With John Thaw, a frank account of her marriage to the late Thaw, also an actor.

Former American president Bill Clinton won Best Biography for his memoirs, entitled My Life, while the Literary Fiction award went to David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, which also picked up the prize for Richard & Judy Best Read of the Year.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey, Sir John Mortimer.
