21/09/2005 TS Eliot letters, poems auctioned in London
A selection of unpublished letters from poet TS Eliot along with a first edition of The Waste Land, inscribed by the author, have sold for £242,652 at auction on Tuesday.
The lots included sets of letters from Eliot to his godson Tom Faber, son of his publisher Geoffrey Faber, and Tom's mother Enid.
Faber, who died in 2004, was Eliot's first godchild and the poet sent him illustrated letters and poems.
In some of the letters, which date from the 1930s, Eliot introduces young Faber to the creatures of his Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.
Faber's widow told the BBC: "My husband often referred to the 'magical times' they'd spent together when Tom was growing up."
"Tom always said that he never thought of TS Eliot as a poet or a scholar. He said that it was the person that counted. He always thought of him as 'Uncle Tom'."
