22/09/2005 Honorary awards for Mailer, Ferlinghetti
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer and Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti are to be presented with honorary awards by the US-based National Book Foundation.
One of America's most renowned and controversial authors, Mailer, 82, is to receive the Foundation's 2005 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
"Mailer has long been considered a major figure in post-war American literature whose innovative works of fiction and nonfiction have changed the landscape of American writing," said the Foundation.
Poet and social activist Ferlinghetti will be presented with the first Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to The American Literary Community.
The Foundation said: "This Award recognizes Ferlinghetti's tireless work on behalf of poets and the entire literary community for over fifty years."
The awards will be hosted by Garrison Keillor and presented in New York on 16 November .
