Unseen Kerouac play to get released

Beatnik writer Jack Kerouac is due to have his first play published - 36 years after his death.

Kerouac, who died in 1969, wrote the play Beat Generation in 1957, the same year as his seminal novel On The Road.

The play depicts a day in the life of Kerouac's alter ego Jack Duluoz as he drinks and gambles with characters based on other lynchpins of the Beat generation, including Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady.

The play was rediscovered by his agent, Sterling Lord, in a New Jersey warehouse where it had been residing for 48 years after Kerouac proved unable to get it performed.

Lord told the New York Post that the play "conveys the mood of the time extraordinarily well, and also the characters are authentically drawn. Some people have compared it to some of the great European playwrights."

Beat Generation is due to be released in October by US publisher Thunders Mouth Press.
