Blyton's Famous Five top poll
Enid Blyton's Famous Five series has topped a poll to find the best
children's books.
The adventures of Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog beat the
Pevensey children in CS Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia into second place,
despite the boost given to the fantasy stories by the current film.
The YouGov poll of 2,688 adults was commissioned to launch a drive by the
National Literacy Trust, sponsored by Starbucks, to get 50,000 books for
schools donated to Starbucks stores this Christmas.
Another Blyton creation, The Faraway Tree, came third in the poll, followed
by JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit, Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
and Anna Sewell's Black Beauty.
Blyton's 21 Famous Five adventures, which were written between 1942 and
1963, still sell two million copies a year.
Blyton also took 16th and 17th place in the top 20 with the Secret Seven
adventure series and the Malory Towers girls' school series.
