23/02/2005 Cuban author Guillermo Cabrera Infante dies in London
Guillermo Cabrera Infante, acclaimed as the outstanding Cuban novelist of his generation, has died in London. He was 75.
The novelist, screenwriter, film critic and historian of tobacco was an outspoken opponent of Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
Infante had been imprisoned under the Batista regime in 1952 and initially welcomed the new freedoms after 1959 Cuban revolution but clashed with the government over the censorship of a film directed by his brother in 1961.
He subsequently spent almost forty years in exile in London, taking British citizenship, and vowing not to return to Cuba while Castro ruled.
His best-known book was Tres Tristes Tigres (translated as Three Trapped Tigers, 1967) which shared some elements of magical realism with Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
He is survived by his wife, the actress Miriam Gomez, and two daughters from his first marriage.
