Turkish writer and publisher fined

An Istanbul court has fined writer Zulkuf Kisanak and publisher Aziz Ozer for insulting the Turkish state.

Kisanak's 2004 book 'Lost Villages' is about the forced evacuation by Turkish armed forces of 14 villages in eastern Turkey over the last 100 years.

Ozer was fined for publishing two articles which criticised Turkey's backing of the US-led war in Iraq.

They were both prosecuted under the much-criticised Article 301 of the penal code for insulting Turkish identity.

The Istanbul court first jailed Kisanak and Ozer for five months but later reduced the sentences to fines - 3,000 lira and 6,000 lira respectively.

They are among more than 60 writers and publishers, including novelist Orhan Pamuk, to face charges under the law which critics say is suppressing freedom of expression.
