25/04/2005 Tóibín wins LA Times Award
Colm Tóibín has won the prestigious Los Angeles Times Book Award for his novel The Master. He won the fiction category.
The Master was previously shortlisted for The Man Booker Prize, The WHSmith Award, The British Book Awards and The Hughes & Hughes/Sunday Independent Novel of the Year, however this is the first award it has won.
The Master which details the life of Henry James received the following citation from the Times, "an illumination of the very process of writing itself - a compelling, richly rewarding and utterly original work of fiction about family and friendship and art in the Modern Age."
Journalist Harold Evans presided over the 25th annual Los Angeles Times Awards which were held last Friday night at UCLA's Royce Hall.
Awards were given to books in nine different categories.
