25/08/2005 Lumley, Townsend on shortlist for Wit Award
Actress Joanna Lumley and Sue Townsend, the inventor of Adrian Mole, are both on the shortlist of the Saga magazine Award for Wit.
Saga, the British magazine for the over 50s, announced its seven-title shortlist yesterday.
According to the magazine, the books "cover the gamut of humour from side-splitting to satire, from brilliant observation and evocation of lost worlds to a thriller that is set in a future almost too close for comfort."
Emma Soames, the magazine's editor and head of the judges, said laughter among the seniors was usually "all about sit-down, rather than stand-up comedy," adding, "wit is a craft that improves with years of practice and, like a good wine, matures beautifully with age."
The winner will be announced at the Folkestone literary festival on September 19.
Shortlisted books:
Alistair Beaton - A Planet for the President
Michael Bywater - Lost Worlds
Terry Darlington - Narrow Dog to Carcassonne
Marina Lewycka - A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian
Joanna Lumley - No Room for Secrets
Sue Townsend - Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction
Patrick Wilmot - Seeing Double
