Pinter unable to attend Nobel ceremony
Harold Pinter, the British playwright and poet who won this year's Nobel
Prize for Literature, is unable to attend next month's award ceremony in
Stockholm for health reasons.
In a statement from the Nobel Foundation, it was announced that Pinter's
publisher Stephen Page will accept the Nobel medal and diploma on his behalf
on 10 December.
The writer will travel to Stockholm for a few days to present the
traditional laureate's lecture at the Swedish Academy but will not be able
to stay on for the award ceremony.
The lecture will be broadcast live on the official web site of the Nobel
Foundation and on the website of the Swedish Academy.
Pinter, considered Britain's greatest living playwright, was diagnosed with
oesophageal cancer three years ago.
His plays include 'The Room', 'The Birthday Party', 'The Caretaker' and 'The
Homecoming'.
