Winfrey to produce The Colour Purple musical
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey will produce a Broadway musical based on Alice Walker's acclaimed novel The Colour Purple.
Winfrey made her critically acclaimed film debut in Steven Spielberg's 1985 film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
The New York Times reported that Winfrey is investing more than $1m into the show, which will be called Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Colour Purple.
Winfrey told the Times: "I hope...to open the door to the possibilities for a world of people who have never been or even thought of going to a Broadway show."
"It's been a secret dream of mine to be part of Broadway," she added.
The show is scheduled to open in December.
