28/10/2005 Depp to star in Shantaram adaptation
Johnny Depp has confirmed his involvement in the Warner Bros film adaptation of Gregory David Roberts' Shantaram.
Based on Roberts' own life, the book is set in the 1980s and details the adventures of an Australian heroin addict who goes on the run after being charged with armed robbery.
The main character, to be played by Depp, escapes to India and reinvents himself as a doctor.
He also, at different stages in his life, works as a gunrunner, a smuggler and a counterfeiter.
Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth will adapt the novel for the big screen.
