American cook takes blogging book prize
Julie Powell's Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen has taken the first literary prize for bloggers turned authors.
Powell beat the intimate diary of a prostitute, Belle De Jour, and a guide to the UK's best greasy spoon caf s to take the Blooker Prize - Egg, Bacon, Chips and Beans.
The contest is devoted to books that have emerged from blogs.
Powell chronicled her attempts to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Child's 1961 cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking online.
Her blog led to a publishing deal and the resulting book has sold more than 100,000 copies.
A total of 89 entries vied for the Blooker.
Other category winners included a serialised gothic novel, Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherie Priest, and Totally Boned: A Joe and Monkey Collection, a comic book by Zach Miller.
