Shortlists for Carnegie, Greenaway Medals announced
The shortlists for children's book prizes, the Carnegie Medal and the Kate Greenaway Illustrators Medal were announced yesterday.
The internationally respected awards are administered and judged by librarians.
The Carnegie, which carries no prize fund, was founded 69 years ago and has been won by authors including Philip Pullman, Noel Streatfield and CS Lewis.
This year the Carnegie shortlist includes Turbulence by the late Jan Mark, who has won the medal on two previous occasions.
Newcomer Mal Peet's book Tamar is also in the running as are three authors who have won it once - David Almond for Clay; the bestselling Geraldine McCaughrean for The White Darkness; and Frank Cottrell Boyce with Framed.
None of the eight finalists for the 5,000 Kate Greenaway Medal have held it previously.
Named in honour of the distinguished illustrator, the Medal - now in its 49th year - is awarded for "outstanding illustration in a children's book".
The 2005 winners of both medals will be announced at a London ceremony on Friday 7 July 2006.
