Orange Prize longlist announced

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
The Orange Prize for Fiction, the UK's only annual book award for fiction written by a woman, today announced the 2006 longlist.

Among the 20 authors listed are Helen Dunmore - winner of the inaugural Orange Prize - and two writers that made last year's Booker Prize shortlist, Zadie Smith and Ali Smith.

As well as established authors (Sarah Waters, Marilynne Robinson, Joyce Carol Oates, Hilary Mantel and Philippa Gregory), five first-time authors are on the longlist.

Now in its 11th year, the Orange Prize for Fiction celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women's writing.

Previous winners include Lionel Shriver for We Need to Talk About Kevin, Andrea Leavy for Small Island and Ann Patchett for Bel Canto.

The shortlist will be released on 26 April with the awards ceremony taking place on 6 June.

The winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction receives 30,000, which is anonymously endowed, and a limited edition bronze figurine called the 'Bessie'.
