Billie Piper to star in Pullman's adaptation
Doctor Who star Billie Piper is to star in a BBC adaptation of Philip
Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke.
Piper is to play orphan Sally Lockhart, a young girl who turns sleuth to
solve the mystery of her father's death, in the Victorian thriller.
The first of four Sally Lockhart novels, The Ruby in the Smoke is due to
begin filming in May.
It is to be followed by an adaptation of the second novel in the series, The
Shadow In The North.
BBC drama boss Laura Mackie said: "Billie is the perfect choice for bringing
to life this engaging and fearless heroine."
Mackie also had praise for Pullman.
"Philip is, without question, one of Britain's leading novelists," she said.
"His books are full of absorbing characters and engaging multi-layered plots
that appeal to both adults and children alike."
Pullman's acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy is also being made into a
series of movies.
