Hanks to star in film of Charlie Wilson's War?
Mike Nichols is in discussions to direct Tom Hanks in CIA drama Charlie
Wilson's War, based on the book by George Crile.
In the book Crile, a former Sixty Minutes producer, investigates the
expenditure of what eventually amounted to $1 billion US dollars a year to
support Afghanistan's Mujahideen in their battle against the Soviets.
The covert ops were engineered by charismatic, wheeler-dealer, liberal Texas
congressman Charlie Wilson who teamed up with rogue CIA operative, Gust
Avrakotos.
The two men manipulated Congress, the CIA and many foreign governments in
order to assist the Afghan rebels in their fight against the Soviets.
Subsequently many of the men armed by the CIA went on to become the
Taliban's enforcers and protectors of Osama bin Laden.
Creator of The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin, has adapted Crile's book for the big
screen.
