Knightley to star in McEwan's Atonement
British actress Keira Knightley has been cast in the Focus Features/Working Title production of Ian McEwan's Booker Prize-nominated novel, Atonement.
The film, which is helmed by Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright, tells the story of imaginative 13-year-old Briony (Saoirse Ronan) who falsely accuses her older sister's boyfriend (James McAvoy) of assaulting their cousin.
Knightley will play the role of Briony's sister, Cecilia.
The film follows the characters from the mid-1930s through World War II to the end of the 20th century, as Briony tries to atone for her earlier actions.
Vanessa Redgrave, Brenda Blethyn and Romola Garai also star.
The project has just begun filming in the UK with a 2007 release planned.
