Orange Prize shortlist announced
The Orange Prize for Fiction shortlist was announced last night, with four British writers, one American and one Australian writer making up the six-strong list.
Man Booker nominees Ali Smith (The Accidental) and Zadie Smith (On Beauty), together with Hilary Mantel with Beyond Black and Sarah Waters with The Night Watch make up the four Britons.
The shortlist is completed by American Nicole Krauss' The History of Love and Australian Carrie Tiffany's debut novel Everyman's Rules for Scientific Living.
Three of the authors - Ali Smith (2001), Zadie Smith (2000, 2003) and Sarah Waters (2002) - have previously been shortlisted for the Orange Prize.
"We have been very lucky as some of the country's finest writers have excellent books out this year and that is reflected in our choice," commented Martha Kearney, Chair of judges.
Now in its eleventh year, the Orange Prize for Fiction celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women's writing.
The winner, which will be announced on 6 June, will be presented with a cheque for 30,000 and a limited edition bronze statue known as 'the Bessie', created by artist Grizel Niven.
