Bennett tipped to win Samuel Johnson prize
Alan Bennett's latest book Untold Stories has been tipped to win the BBC Four Samuel Johnson prize for non-fiction.
Bennett has been short-listed for the 2006 prize along with 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, by James Shapiro, Post-war : A History of Europe Since 1945, by Tony Judt, The Sale of the Late King's Goods, by Jerry Brotton, The Orientalist, by Tom Reiss,Bad Faith, by Carmen Callil, and The Sale of the Late King's Goods, by Jerry Brotton, 796.
Untold Stories, where Bennet writes in unmediated form about his life and family, sold 333,268 copies in the eight months since it was published - which is ten times as much as the other five books put together.
Although Bennett has received numerous satge, television and film awards, he has only received one book prize for his 41 books.
The winner of the £30,000 prize will be announced on 14 June on BBC Four.
