Publisher pulls Viswanathan's debut novel
The publisher Little, Brown and Company has taken Kaavya Viswanathan's debut novel - How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life - off the market following plagiarism charges.
The 19-year-old Harvard University student apologised for having unintentionally used sections from Megan McCafferty's books Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings.
McCafferty and her publishers have rejected the apology, saying: "We think there are simply too many instances of 'borrowing' for this to have been unintentional."
Viswanathan's book was the first in a two-book $500,000 deal that she signed when she was 17. The movie rights have already been acquired by DreamWorks.
