Tóibín, Bennett on Booker longlist
It was announced today that Wexford's Colm Tóibín and Belfast-born author Ronan Bennett are both on the 2004 Man Booker Prize longlist.
Bennett's 'Havoc, in its Third Year' (Simon & Schuster) and Tóibín's fictional study of Henry James, 'The Master' (Picador), are among the 22 books chosen to compete for the 50,000 prize.
David Mitchell, an English author resident in Ireland, is also on the longlist for his novel, 'Cloud Atlas' (Sceptre).
Chair of judges, Chris Smith MP, said: "I'm particularly pleased that there are a number of first or second novels on the list as well as a number of well-established writers."
"Getting a shortlist of six out of this variety will be a nightmare," he added.
The 2004 shortlist will be announced on Tuesday 21 September at a press
conference at the Man Group's London office and the winner will be announced on
Tuesday 19 October at an awards ceremony in London.
Last year's winner, 'Vernon God Little' by DBC Pierre (Faber & Faber) has gone on to sell nearly half a million copies and is being translated into 30 languages.
