The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith Meeting: Thursday 27th May 2004
Precious Ramotswe is an interesting feisty woman who starts up the first
detective agency in Botswana. She has a knack for drawing out clues from her
clients but unfortunately there are too few case-studies illustrated here to
conjure up a true picture of our heroine.
There are undercurrents of romance, lingering portraits of the African
landscape and nostalgia for her hardworking father. It is a simple and
enjoyable book but not gripping enough to make me want to read the entire
series, however, I would recommend it as a holiday read. 2/5

What the other femmes had to say
"This book reminded me of GK Chesterton's Father Brown stories - but without the depth and wit. An unsubstantial, forgettable read that aspires to be far more literary than it is. Give me chick fic any day!" 2/5
"This book tried to be too many things and failed at all of them. I felt like I'd been had reading this unoriginal, forgettable book that as a series, is nothing more than a clever marketing idea." 2/5
"Predictable, fun and easygoing. Perfect for the beach or bus." 3/5
"Interesting take on the original 'who dunnit story' and an easy read that won't tax your brain" 3/5
"Jelly and icecream for the brain, an untaxing read perfect for airport terminal/ flight/ sunlounger." 3/5
"Some interesting stories along the way but overall it reads like a comic
book with Mme Ramotswe as the central cartoon hero character. Harmless
stuff, but in no way deserving of the hype." 2/5
